Whatever the ups and downs of a son’s relationship with his father, fathers do occasionally know best, and so listening to your dad can be a good idea. Arnold listened when his father, Deacon Palmer, showed him how to grip a golf club and said “don’t you change that.”

He listened when, after Arnie threw a golf club in frustration during a match as a boy, his father told him never to behave that way again—or he’d be finished with golf. Arnold listened when Deacon told him to grow up and marry Winnie, his first wife. And he listened when his father said, “Arnold, you don’t need to tell anybody how good you are. You show them how good you are.” Sound advice, all of it, and how wonderful for all of us that Palmer took it to heart.
