"Keep it legible" Arnold Palmer used to tell pros, and they listened. To Arnie, autographs meant something, "a personal experience, a memento on which you can't put a price," he wrote in his book "A Life Well Played."

Accordingly, Palmer always made sure that his signature was legible—and he often told other pros to do the same. "I've taken that to heart my entire life," Peter Jacobsen once said. "I don't sign my name anymore. I draw my name, just like Arnold did. I take time so that it's legible." Ernie Els, Matt Kuchar and Paula Creamer and a number of others also have said that they take Palmer's lesson to heart when it comes to signing their names. As Palmer wrote of a legible autograph, "It might take an extra second or two, but it's worth the effort.”
