#68: The Million-Dollar Man
A few years before The Six Million Dollar Man appeared on TV, Arnold Palmer took top prize at the 1967 American Golf Classic and became the first professional golfer in history to make more than $1 million in career earnings.
The $20,000 winner's check put him over the top, though he wasn't the tour's money leader that year. In fact, he appeared atop the list only four times, perhaps surprising given his legacy, but his impact was such that the award for the tour's money leader was long named "The Arnold Palmer Award." At this year's Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard, it was announced that henceforth the Arnold Palmer Award will go to the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year—a priceless honor named for golf's first Million Dollar Man.
