Today lauded as one of the few halls of fame that honors both men and women at the same site, the World Golf Hall of Fame was originally located at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.

Now in St. Augustine, Florida, the hall opened on September 11, 1974, with an inaugural class of 13 members, one of whom was Arnold Palmer. President Gerald Ford spoke at the opening, which included the other members of the “Big Three,” along with Sam Snead, Patty Berg, Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson, Babe Zaharias and others. Of Palmer's inclusion, the hall states that “It is not hyperbole to say that golf’s place within popular culture today is in due in large part to the powerful presence of Arnold Palmer… [Golf] needed a star, and Palmer… was the perfect star."
