#52: Becoming a Father
Two years after winning the U.S. Amateur and turning pro, Arnold Palmer—a then-burgeoning golf legend—became a father.
Peggy was born first, in 1956, and two years later Winnie and Arnold welcomed Amy, born in August, a few months after Palmer won his first Green Jacket. Traveling frequently for golf and being a celebrity made fatherhood challenging, Palmer wrote in his book “A Life Well Played,” and it wasn’t always easy on the girls. But, he wrote, “Winnie and I raised two beautiful, intelligent, creative, strong-willed daughters… It’s beyond words describing how proud I am of them… Nothing in my life has been more rewarding than being a father.”
