Arnold Palmer’s skills on course earned him 92 professional trophies, but his character was awarded as well, with the love of his fans and, in 1971, with the Bob Jones Award.

Presented annually to the “individual who demonstrates the spirit, personal character and respect for the game exhibited by Bob Jones.” Palmer’s “generosity of spirit toward opponents, fans and golf in general” was noted by the New York Times, which reported that the USGA particularly appreciated his 1969 U.S. Open appearance. There, Palmer had graciously accepted a draw that put him at the back of the field in a threesome with two amateurs. “To be able to play with two amateurs in back of the leaders in the Open isn't bad after you've done it once,” Palmer said to laughter at the awards ceremony, a fitting recipient of the USGA’s highest honor.
