In 1995, 35 years after he first crossed the Atlantic to play in the Open Championship, Arnold Palmer returned to where it all began for him, the Old Course at St Andrews, to play the event for the last time and to bid farewell to a tournament—and a nation—that he cherished.

A now iconic photograph of Palmer on the bridge over the Swilcan Burn on the 18th hole captured the moment well, as Palmer explained in A Golfer's Life: "If you look closely at the photograph... You can see that I appear to be deeply pained and powerfully happy, as if I'm anxious to move off the stage and let others shine, but reluctant to finally go. In fact that's exactly how I felt."
